FAQ’s about St. Luke’s Church

What is St. Luke’s?

St. Luke’s Church is a congregation of individuals working together to live out God’s call by bringing all people to God’s healing embrace. We are also a congregation affiliated with The Episcopal Church of the United States of America.

What does it mean to be part of the Episcopal Church?

To be part of the Episcopal Church means that as a congregation we recognize the Bishop as the head and lead care taker of our congregation. We participate in the national governance and guidance of the House of Bishops and Convention. We believe that the Holy Spirit speaks to us today through the traditions of the past, the Bible and our ability to reason. We are also unified spiritually through our use of the Book of Common Prayer as the outline for our worship both as a community and at home.

How does St. Luke’s live out its mission to bring all people to God’s healing embrace?

We do this through prayer, weekly worship together, Christian Formation (education) and outreach to the community both here in Syracuse and beyond

What is worship like at St. Luke’s?

Our worship is very similar to that of the Roman Catholic Church. On Sunday mornings we gather for the celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Communion or Mass). Our worship style can be described as traditional, solemn but never stuffy.

What is the outreach of St. Luke’s?

The outreach of St. Luke’s is as varied as its people. Many people through work or volunteer activity live out the healing work of Christ in the world. Our formal outreach has taken the form of providing volunteers for Meals on Wheels, our Seeds of Faith Garden, which has provided fresh produce for Meals on Wheels and our Mitten Tree and our ongoing food collection for St. Charles food pantry, our annual Vacation Bible School and our Low Cost Karate program on Friday nights. We also participate in Medical Mission work in El Salvador. In the past we have helped build a house with Habitat for Humanity, bought beds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and bought a fishing boat for a family who lost theirs in the Tsunami several years ago. Last year we gave several hundred pounds of school supplies to a school in Afghanistan.

Who is welcomed at St. Luke’s?

Everyone is welcome to be part of this community. We are an open and affirming community and no matter what your background or spiritual past, all who come are invited to our table to receive communion on Sunday mornings.

When is worship at St. Luke’s?

We gather as a community most Sundays at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. We have two special Sundays you may wish to join us for ;

Sunday, October 18, at 10:30 we will have CNY Karate join us for a demonstration during our service followed by a Harvest Luncheon.

Sunday, November 1, we will celebrate All Saints Day with a chance to remember those who have died followed by a Halloween party complete with games and food for all ages.
